How to Celebrate Labor Day with Kids

September 02, 2022

Labor Day is one of our favorite holidays here at ZoLi... and not just because of our Annual Labor Day sale! Mostly because it's a great day for families to spend a long weekend together without any pressing obligations that sometimes come attached to a holiday.

Here are our top 10 favorite ways to spend the holiday with the whole family at home!

  1. Soak up the last bit of summer
  2. Get into the fall mindset
  3. Hit the shops
  4. RELAX!
  5. Say thank you with some treats
  6. Park cook-out... or indoor picnic to beat the heat!
  7. Labor Day parade or local event
  8. Solve a corn maze
  9. Labor Day scavenger hunt
  10. Learn more about the holiday

1. SOAK UP THE LAST BIT OF SUMMER 💦

For us, Labor Day marks the last few weekends of summer. That makes it the perfect time to take that last pool or beach day or to break out the sprinklers for the kiddos!

2. GET INTO THE FALL MINDSET 🍁

Speaking of the last few weeks of summer - fall is quickly approaching! That means decorating your porch with hay bails and pumpkins, taking that Target run to grab all of the fall decor they've had out for MONTHS, and breaking out those burnt orange pillows 🤩

3. HIT THE SHOPS 🛒

Preparing for fall couldn't come at a better time with all of the Labor Day Sales popping up this weekend! This is also the perfect time to start shopping for early ✨ Christmas presents and stocking stuffers ✨ Yep, we said it. It may seem early, but grabbing little things like teethers and sippy cups now makes all the difference on Christmas Eve!

4. RELAX! 🧘🏽‍♀️

Labor day by definition pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers... what better way to celebrate your hard work and achievements than taking a relaxing day off! Maybe even try some yoga if you're looking to achieve full relaxation and stretch out those limbs that are so used to working on a Monday!

5. SAY THANK YOU WITH SOME TREATS 🍪

While many of us get Labor Day Monday off from work, many jobs can't take the holiday! For example, firefighters, police officers, and nurses. Throw together some cookies (a fun activity in itself!) and bring them to a community helper to show your appreciation.

6. PLAN A COOK-OUT 🍗

Whether it's a small picnic in your backyard or an entire neighborhood bash, every holiday needs some delicious food to celebrate! Our favorite BBQ addition this year would be some corn.... we can't imagine a more beautiful thing 😉🌽

7. ATTEND A LOCAL EVENT 🥳

Many towns will have parades or festivals this weekend to celebrate Labor Day - check your town's website or local business's Instagram pages for updates on any fun events you can join in on!

8. SOLVE A CORN MAZE 🌽

In addition to local events for the holiday specifically, many seasonal locations tend to open up on Labor Day weekend! Our favorites that tend to pop up this time of year are pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and even seasonal fruit stands.

9. LABOR DAY SCAVENGER HUNT 🇺🇸

Write a list of your favorite labor day items... a bbq, a flag, a fire truck... and set off around town trying to spot them! This is a great way to get the family out of the house without spending money or needing a complicated plan.

10. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HOLIDAY 📚

We can't be the only ones who google "how did Labor Day start" every year, right? This is a great excuse to brush up on how the holiday began and appreciate the men and women who work every day to make our lives a little better. ❤️
