Family Fun | Christmas Gift Conundrum

Every Christmas, I used to struggle with not only what to get each child but also how many.  And it had to be fair.  If one child got five gifts, the other had to get five gifts.  It was a rapid slide into the gift-giving madness.

Something had to be done quick for me to maintain my sanity.  Rather than going to the extreme and adopting a no-gift policy (my kids would kill me), I came across this four-gift per child rule – something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.  We've been doing this for the last four years and it has worked out perfectly for us.  It simplifies my holiday shopping and ... I still get to experience their excitement in the weeks leading up to Christmas and see their excited faces when they tear into their presents Christmas morning.

Rule of 4 Gifting

Without having to stress about what to buy and not having to deal with the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, I now have more time to spend with my family doing activities to celebrate the season.  It's a win-win for all of us.  Here are some of our favorite things to do:

  • decorating gingerbread houses
  • making homemade ornaments
  • trimming the tree
  • drinking peppermint hot cocoa
  • baking holiday treats
  • take a holiday light tour
  • read a Christmas story
  • watch a Christmas movie

How do you tackle the number of gifts conundrum?  What are some of your favorite activities to enjoy the spirt of the season?
