When the weather starts getting cooler, we go through a LOT of hot chocolate in our house. We used to use the packaged kind, but then I discovered how easy it was to make your own homemade hot cocoa mix and we've never turned back. I'll usually make a large batch late fall then make another one in February. However, this year, my daughter wanted to whip up a batch to hand out as gifts for the holidays so we are making a special batch for her and her friends.
We normally use make our cocoa with milk - I prefer the richer taste but since this was going out to teenagers, we adapted the recipe to add dry milk so all the kids need to do is add hot water.
Ingredients
Directions
In a large bowl, sift the powdered sugar, then the cocoa to get rid of all the lumps. Stir in the powdered milk and gently stir/whisk until everything is mixed in.
To make the hot cocoa, I add about 1/4 cup of the cocoa mix and about 8 ounces of hot water on top, stir until no lumps.
For the mason jar gifts, we added 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips and a handful of mini marshmallows and peppermint marshmallows.
