New Year Resolutions or Monthly Goals?

January 10, 2022

New Year / New Start

The start of a new year is a natural milestone to pause and reassess what is going on in your life.  Like many, excited for the new year I made resolutions in the past only to fail at keeping them for longer than two months.  Apparently this is a common occurrence.  Research has shown that only 19 percent of individuals keep their resolutions and most abandon their resolutions by mid January!

This year, I am going to do something slightly different.  I decided to take a monthly approach to my 2022 goals and kick off the year with January goals.  These goals will challenge me to create new habits.  At the end of 31 days, I will re-evaluate and adjust if needed, and set these goals again for the next month or make new ones!  The tip is to keep the goals measurable.

So for January, my goals are:

  • Rain or Shine - Get outdoors for 30 minutes every day
  • Eat less meat - Make 1 new vegetarian recipe for dinner each week
  • Stay organized - Take advantage of items I already have for organization like my STASH backpack for organizing on the go.

Last week, we asked some folks what their top resolutions / goals were for 2022 and the top responses revolved around:

  • Self-Care: The majority of responses mentioned being gentle with ourselves and taking even a small amount of time each week to practice self care. We think this is an amazing goal to set especially after the whirlwind of 2019 through 2021!
  • Quality Time with Loved Ones: Another common trend that we saw was remaining kind to those around us and spending intentional quality time with family and friends.
  • Less Social Media Time: This goal was mentioned several times and we think that it is a gateway to the two previous goals as well! Many responders expressed a desire to disconnect from the social media world even if it is just for an evening each week.

We would love to hear if anyone has tried monthly goals! If so, what were your goals and did you feel like this method worked?
