National Inventors Day! Why a Weighted Straw Sippy Cup?

People often say that necessity is the mother of invention.  That is definitely true when it comes to the ZoLi BOT weighted straw sippy cup's invention!

It all started back in 2005 when our older daughter was going through the bottle to sippy transition. She struggled, and so did we. We tried all different kinds of sippy cups but she wouldn’t have anything to do with them. It wasn’t until we came across one with a silicone spout that it clicked. Then all was good for a while until our pediatrician recommended that we move to a straw cup for better oral development. So, onto straw cups …

It wasn’t too hard moving to a straw cup… then we had our “aha” moment. We were eating out and had just ordered a cup of water for our daughter with a straw and lid. The lid must not have been placed all that securely because as she tipped it to drink, all the contents poured out all over her and her clothes. She was drenched. There had to be a better solution …

Fast forward to 2007, when my husband and I decided to launch a baby products company. We knew when we launched ZoLi that a sippy cup would be part of the lineup. Based on our experience with our older daughter, we had a few criterias in mind for the ZoLi cup. As we started developing the cup, we came across a very cool technology that had been around but never applied to a sippy cup before. It had been used by some obscure brands in baby bottles to reduce colic and promote more upright drinking position in babies to prevent liquid from flowing into the middle ear. This made sense but I thought it would be more relevant when used in a sippy cup. This would help younger kids to transition straight from bottles to a straw cup. Toddlers sometimes have a harder time drinking from a straw because they couldn’t tilt the straw cup the same way they would a bottle but with a weighted flexible straw, the straw would follow however the cup is moved so that they can always get to the liquid (360 degrees).

When we launched BOT weighted straw sippy cup in 2008, there was no other cup like it in the market!!  The BOT straw sippy was definitely a game-changer in the sippy cup segment.  We would hear from parents about how easy it was to get their child to transition to a sippy cup with the ZoLi cup.  Kids loved it! Parents loved it.

Since BOT's invention, we have created several options for little ones to use our weighted straw technology. From our original cup, BOT, in 2008... to our larger capacity BOT XL in 2012... to our advanced BOT 2.0 in 2016... to our newest color refresh in 2019... we've been updating and reinventing the weighted straw segment continuously for all families to enjoy!
